Back in 2022, we first prototyped the Northern Special for a winter campaign at Meadowlands Fishery. This pattern, which is now known as the NS-1, was incredibly reliable and extremely productive, resulting in some fantastic outcomes throughout the winter series. Unfortunately, we had to shelve the idea for a couple of years until we perfected the machinery and knowledge to mass-produce the tip system that we use on these floats. More on that shortly. Fast forward to the autumn of 2024; we had the software and knowledge in place to continue this project, so we went about prototyping several patterns. During the summer of ’25, these floats were used exclusively at venues in the Northwest area, most notably Partridge Lakes, where they resulted in some fantastic outcomes, using, ironically, short on a meat line.
What are the Northern Specials?
These floats embody all the qualities we are renowned for. The extended timeframe from the initial prototype to the present was dedicated to ensuring that we deliver a product that is both reliable and durable. Our focus has always been on creating something truly functional, rather than just a flashy gimmick or a shinny toy
The Northern Special range will only offer solid and glass tips but will still feature our hybrid slimline eye system, which, in our opinion, is simply the best on the market and ultimately the most reliable, which will put more fish in your net over five hours or the course of a season, guaranteed!
The current range featuring the NS-1, NS-2, and NS-3 will see the inclusion of:
NS-1 = 1.6mm Glass Tips
NS-2 = 1.3mm Glass Tips
NS-3 = 1.3mm Solid Tips
We have left nothing to chance with these patterns. We have altered our body shape to an elongated, more streamlined slim style, offering less resistance to shy feeding fish, while still maintaining stability through the water column in calm and adverse weather conditions. The inclusion of our tried and tested formula in the XL range, featuring 0.7mm carbon stems, has been transferred over. Our tips, which are individually created in-house and are exclusive to ourselves, have been finished in our high visibility ink to create a solid ViZi Tip.

Why opt for a solid plastic or fiberglass tip over a hollow one?
Solid plastic and fiberglass tips are incredibly sensitive because they submerge easily; only the buoyant body keeps the tip above the surface. In contrast, hollow tips trap air, making them more buoyant and less responsive to subtle bites.
Hollow tips can be beneficial when using larger baits or when fishing in more favorable conditions. However, solid tips excel at detecting delicate indications, making them ideal for subtle bites. That said, they do present more challenges when it comes to shotting; achieving the right balance and placement of shot requires careful precision.
Weather conditions, from air pressure to current, can also influence performance. To enhance sensitivity on certain days, we suggest considering the use of Vaseline or bristle grease on the tip. This application can significantly improve resistance to movement and increase buoyancy. Additionally, using a backshot is highly recommended to further enhance your setup.
